Caring For Your Pearls

Pearls are the world's only organic gem, formed by a living creature. This means special attention is required to ensure pearls will stay beautiful and last a lifetime.

  • Always spray perfume and apply make up a few minutes before putting on pearls. Both will damage the skin of a pearl and will cling to the silk used in stringing.Remember the phrase “last thing on, first thing off” as a good guide to how to wear pearls.
  • If worn heavily pearls should be restrung regularly, and even if worn occasionally it will help to have them restrung every couple of years.Check the string every six months or so. At the first sign of fraying the pearls should be restrung.
  • Store pearls away from other jewellery, especially heavy gold pieces or stone set pieces that might damage the nacre.
  • Wipe pearls occasionally with a clean soft cloth or cotton wool and a little cool waterand then dry them before storing. Never use any chemical cleaner, only clean, cool water.
